1.                  Introduction

The attention towards the questions concerning sustainable development, local development and nonprofit organisations paid both by universities and international organisations (i.e. World Bank, UNDP, OECD) makes it necessary to arrange tools and ways by which to suggest approaches that can simultaneously be interdisciplinary and comparative.

Since the University of Trento, and especially the Department of Economics, has long been involved in programmes, projects and exchanges focussed on the abovementioned areas, it has been regarded as useful to try and establish a stable international network of academics/university centres and international organisations interested in those sectors.

Therefore, the project aims at making the existing international contacts and networks more effective, so as to strengthen the opportunities of singling out common projects and of developing new lines of research and action. These are supposed to be aimed at stressing a systemic and multidisciplinary vision of economic development at large.

In this respect, particular attention will de devoted to institutional, legal and organisational aspects of development, this being deemed both in economic terms and as actual and present possibility of partnership and co-operation at transnational level.

2.                  Project plan

The project will finish at the end of 2001 and it will consist of the following actions:

1.      survey and arranging of research, partnership and consulting projects at international level

In this phase, opportunities of research and funding offered by European and International Programmes will be scrutinised.

2.      drafting of exchanges programmes for academics and students;

3.      participation in conferences and seminars;

4.      projecting and organisation of international scientific events;

5.      drafting of agreements with other universities or international organisations

In order to strengthen some of the contacts falling within the international network, the possibility of formalising international agreements with some universities or international bodies will be examined.

6.  divulgazione e disseminazione di articoli e pubblicazioni varie.

     To co-ordinate and give greater visibility to the single scientific productions relating to the project’s areas, specific contacts will be established with some international publishers and journals, which may be interested in disseminating (in English) volumes or articles on the topics of the network.
